1K UV-cured polyacrylate is designed to meet the challenges of automotive conditions

Henkel expands rapid cure gasketing sealant range with Loctite AA 5885, optimized for automotive electronics applications

As the automotive industry pivots towards electrification, OEMs are seeking new solutions to enable them to incorporate more electronic components in their product designs, sustainably and effectively. Henkel is helping them meet this challenge with an extensive portfolio of high-performing innovations. Its latest development is Loctite AA 5885, a one-part (1K) polyacrylate UV-curable solution for Cured-in-Place Gasketing applications created to seal electronic units against high temperatures and harsh environmental conditions.

Loctite AA 5885 excels in applications where multi-substrate sealing, serviceability and chemical resistance are critical, including electronic control unit (ECU) module housings, engine and transmission control modules, fuse boxes, actuators, sensing systems, ADAS control modules, and other electronic components.

“This innovative new gasketing solution combines the resistance to automotive fluids found with polyacrylate chemistry, with the ability to maintain uniform compressive stresses across a wider temperature range that you would see in a traditional silicone,” explains Arthur Ackerman, Business Development Manager Auto Electronics. “These characteristics make it ideal for the most challenging environments and for a variety of electronic control unit applications in braking, power steering, and mechatronic systems, where dependable performance in challenging under-the-hood conditions is essential.”

Loctite AA 5885 provides a liquid gasketing solution to applications where sealing is achieved through compression. The uncured liquid has unique flow properties that permit efficient and repeatable pumpability onto parts with complex shapes and geometries. Once dispensed, its rapid viscoelastic recovery permits high-aspect-ratio beads to be preserved through curing. With its UV-active chemistry, Loctite AA 5885 can be cured in as little as 30 seconds and immediately compressed after cure, enabling manufacturers to optimize production cycle times and maximize efficiency.

A highly versatile material, Loctite AA 5885 is compatible with substrates including aluminum and plastic. It maintains seal force over a broad deflection range and can withstand temperatures from -40°C to 150°C in dry or high-humidity environments, while the material is soft enough to increase tooling tolerances without overstressing the part in any environment.

The unique chemistry of Loctite AA 5885 also positions it as a natural choice for manufacturers looking to reduce their environmental footprint. Its rapid curing ability cuts the energy requirements of the curing process compared to other common technologies. At the same time, it is highly space-efficient, helping minimize the amount of floor space given over to parts waiting to cure.
